Palm Care in the Tropics: Cleaning, De-nutting and When to Remove

Palm Care in the Tropics: Cleaning, De-nutting and When to Remove

Palms define the coral coast skyline, and they are some of the easiest trees to live with. They still need a little attention to stay safe, especially in a region that gets cyclones.

Cleaning

Dead fronds hang on longer than you would think and drop without warning. Most palms benefit from a clean once or twice a year, removing dead fronds, old seed pods and debris.

De-nutting

A mature coconut can weigh a couple of kilograms and falls a long way. If your coconut palm overhangs a path, driveway, pool or play area, have the nuts removed regularly.

Avoid over-trimming

Stripping a palm back to a few fronds at the top, sometimes called a hurricane cut, weakens it. Remove dead and dying fronds and leave the green ones.

When removal makes sense

  • The palm has outgrown its space and is too close to the house.
  • The crown is damaged or the trunk is narrowing.
  • Roots or the base are lifting paving or pool surrounds.
  • The palm is a species prone to problems in your spot.

We clean, de-nut and remove palms of any height, including tight spaces where they have to come down piece by piece.
